Once in awhile we uncover a family getaway spot that is so awesome that we just need to share it. Well, our family had one of the most outstanding vacations we have ever had in June. We generally choose to go camping, but we cheated and stayed in a cabin. However, the deal we got was so stupendous we just couldn’t pass it up.
This family owned and operated little beauty is called “Lake in the Forest Black Bear Resort”. It is located in the Ocala National Forest near Silver Springs, Florida. It is nestled in magnificent hardwood hammock on Half Moon Lake. The area is stunning and the people are some of the friendliest we’ve ever come across. The wildlife is plentiful with sand hill cranes, red tailed hawks, and gopher tortoises roaming about. The lake is superb and brimming with bass.

We chose to rent a cabin rather than camp because we were vacationing in June and the heat and bugs can be rather overwhelming in Florida at this time of year. The cabins hold up to 6 people. They are air conditioned, have a full kitchen, a bedroom, a loft for the kids and a porch. Towels, sheets, and kitchen utensils are included. The only thing you need to bring is food, clothes, toiletries and a sense of adventure. Your dog can even accompany you for a nominal fee. If you prefer to stay in a tent or RV they have accommodations for you too.
My 10 year old daughter had had a delightful time with the resident horses and goats. She also enjoyed wonderful craft projects offered at a very modest fee. My 16 year old son brought a fishing buddy along and they spent the majority of their time fishing in a canoe on the lake. We had a fish fry with the bass they hooked and had loads left over for fish sandwiches the following day. In addition we brought a couple pounds of filets home with us. On Saturday evening live entertainment was provided with a band and karaoke, and I have to admit, they weren’t too bad.

There are numerous springs and other nature activities in the territory. We spent Wednesday afternoon at the highly recommended “Silver Glen Springs”. My husband and the kids snorkeled observing the spring and fish. Since the water temperature is a chilly 72 degrees Fahrenheit, and I tend to get chilled easily, I decided to float along in an inflatable chair.

Whether you are partial to tent camping, staying in your RV or a fully loaded cabin you will find “Lake in the Forest” a superior vacation getaway.
