Should spitting be banned? Its not very nice, wherever you may live?
Question by openyoureyespeople!: Should spitting be banned? Its not very nice, wherever you may live?
A few weeks ago, a senior Greek Orthodox clergyman in Israel attended a meeting at a government office in Jerusalem’s Givat Shaul quarter. When he returned to his car, an elderly man wearing a skullcap came and knocked on the window. When the clergyman let the window down, the passerby spat in his face. Advertisement
The clergyman prefered not to lodge a complaint with the police and told an acquaintance that he was used to being spat at by Jews. Many Jerusalem clergy have been subjected to abuse of this kind. For the most part, they ignore it but sometimes they cannot.
On Sunday, a fracas developed when a yeshiva student spat at the cross being carried by the Armenian Archbishop during a procession near the Holy Sepulchre in the Old City. The archbishop’s 17th-century cross was broken during the brawl and he slapped the yeshiva student.
Both were questioned by police and the yeshiva student will be brought to trial. The Jerusalem District Court has meanwhile banned the student from approaching the Old City for 75 days.
But the Armenians are far from satisfied by the police action and say this sort of thing has been going on for years. Archbishop Nourhan Manougian says he expects the education minister to say something.
“When there is an attack against Jews anywhere in the world, the Israeli government is incensed, so why when our religion and pride are hurt, don’t they take harsher measures?” he asks.
According to Daniel Rossing, former adviser to the Religious Affairs Ministry on Christian affairs and director of a Jerusalem center for Christian-Jewish dialogue, there has been an increase in the number of such incidents recently, “as part of a general atmosphere of lack of tolerance in the country.”
Rossing says there are certain common characeristics from the point of view of time and location to the incidents. He points to the fact that there are more incidents in areas where Jews and Christians mingle, such as the Jewish and Armenian quarters of the Old City and the Jaffa Gate.
There are an increased number at certain times of year, such as during the Purim holiday.”I know Christians who lock themselves indoors during the entire Purim holiday,” he says.
Former adviser to the mayor on Christian affairs, Shmuel Evyatar, describes the situation as “a huge disgrace.” He says most of the instigators are yeshiva students studying in the Old City who view the Christian religion with disdain.
“I’m sure the phenomenon would end as soon as rabbis and well-known educators denounce it. In practice, rabbis of yeshivas ignore or even encourage it,” he says.
Evyatar says he himself was spat at while walking with a Serbian bishop in the Jewish quarter, near his home. “A group of yeshiva students spat at us and their teacher just stood by and watched.”
Jerusalem municipal officials said they are aware of the problem but it has to be dealt with by the police. Shmuel Ben-Ruby, the police spokesman, said they had only two complaints from Christians in the past two years. He said that, in both cases, the culprits were caught and punished.
He said the police deploy an inordinately high number of patrols and special technology in the Old City and its surroundings in an attempt to keep order.

this is just too much to read….
They are banned in Singapore.
It should be banned
oh sure, hangin’s to good for unlicensed honkers. Let’s have a law against that, too.
Here’s wishing you a big Christmas cod right on the end of your nose for asking.
Ah well, though, if they are going to outlaw it anywhere, Israel would be the logical choice. They already bulldoze entire neighborhoods and leave families homeless because somebody chucked a rock. Can’t have those dressed-like-undertakers-dreadlocked drips suffering patooie indignity, can we? Torah! Torah! Torah! Can be the battle cry of the spit reformers.
no
Thats just preposterous, and dumb.
When you spit on someone it’s an assault. If they have AIDS or are HIV positive it’s a felony.
You can’t outlaw spitting; you might as well ban urination, defecation, nose-blowing, and bleeding. Give me a break. People spit. They just aren’t supposed to spit in others’ faces.
spitting is bad manners, disrespectful and i’ve been given to understand it spreads TB. its an offence too.
spitting is bad, disrespectful, and germy.
no. i aggree it is disgusting but, if you are walking down the street or driving or whatever and you have a huge amount of phlegm in your throat, it can be very annoying/horrible/uncomfortable. I think that if you are clearing your throat and cannot do it any other way then it should be allowed, but any other way no.
Yes all states in the world, should bann those who spit. It is rude and ignorant and very disgusting.
This article brings up a very good point in my opinion. Spitting is very rude, however, I do not think banning is in order. What about athletes such as myself who must spit when mucus is in our mouths? When I play soccer and im congested I will spit to clear my throat. Surely, though, I feel spitting on a person should be banned, but not spitting in general.
I did not read your question, lack of time, sorry.
But spitting should be banned everywhere that it hasn’t been banned already, i hate when people spit while out of their window while driving.
It’s always been against the law in England. It’s just that no-one these days knows it and wouldn’t take any notice anyway. There has been a massive decline in manners and decency in my lifetime.
My vote is to Ban it. Its riduculous of people being so disrespectful towards others and others religious beliefs.
ways It depends on where you spit I guess. Spitting isn’t nice anyway you look at it. If your spitting to get something bad tasting out of your mouth, there are more discreet ways of doing so. BUT to openly spit in someones face isn’t right. Yes I agree something should be done about it but taking it to the law is going a little over board.
In England it was banned sometime ago to prevent the spread of TB, but like most laws people tend to get a bit lax when no one get fined
Where can I find more about this story? I haven’t read it on the JPost’s website. I am deeply saddened that this could happen in a place where Israel needs all the Christians it can get. Has there been any subsequent retaliations or are these events an aberration.
P.S. A link would have been better, and why did you use this as your example? Do you live in Jerusalem? If not, you should mind your own business.
This question is not about spitting. Its about racism and if you don’t see it you need to change your perspective of the world.
ok I am in the United States of America and no matter how crappy it is do to are president NO ONE has the right to bann somthing like that. Yes it is disgusting and NO it can not spread HIV or Aids as saliva is not a body fluid, now if there was blood in it and it got in to a open wound on you then yes you can get it ITS CALLED A HIGH SCHOOL HELTH CLASS PEOPLE LOOK IN TO IT
It seems that Jesus was spat upon and worse. Jesus even told us that we would be hated because of our love for Him and The Father. Therefore, we know that there are those that want to kill us. If all they do is spit on us, Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
fair enough ban it, how do you police it.
This is a slippery slope you are on. I do not deny that spitting on somone is disgusting an offensive, but there are times when it’s probably a better alternative than what is truely on the spitters mind and in his / her heart. And what of the tobacco & snuce chewers? They spit – but not on people, I think you would be hard pressed to push through a law like this in Texas, Wyoming, Montana, the Dakotas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and many other state in the Union.
What’s next? Nose picking? Comb sniffing? Zit Poping? Wearing too much cologne or Perfume? Being Over weight?
Not having enhanced breasts and wearing a thong to the beach? Swearing? Wearing T-Shirts with graphics or slogans that someone, somewhere -might find offensive?
If you are going to make spitting illegal – fine – then make it definative. It must be seen or interpreted by the offended party or as witnessed by bystanders or the police as a hostile act or act of agression or contempt by one party directed towards another, Note that there is no mitigating factor such as verbal provication, hand or facial gesturing, or other non-physical contact required on the part of the victim, which is cause for legitimizing the battery of spitting on another. Each time a person spits on another; He/She shall be said to have been guilty of commiting a single count of battery towards / upon the victim.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Yes it should because thats just nasty.
you better never move to china.
Why not?
But How?
Since we still have cave-men living in the 21st century.
Luke 9.55-56
What do you think?
